S S Vasan, Honorary Visiting Professor, University of York; Senior Business Development Manager, Public Health England

Honorary Visiting Professor S.S. Vasan (who goes by his surname) is a public health expert and holds an honorary chair in the Department of Health Sciences. He is currently senior business development manager for Public Health England (PHE), and performed this role for its predecessor public body the Health Protection Agency. A former McKinsey consultant and Rhodes scholar, he is also Adjunct Professor of Preventive and Social Medicine at JIPMER, an institution of national importance under India’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
Vasan is PHE’s business development lead for innovation, consultancy and global health including response to Zika and Ebola (for which his team got the Impact Award for Contribution to Society from RCUK and PraxisUnico). He is member of PHE’s Finance and Commercial Wider Senior Leadership Team, Global Health Committee, Intellectual Property Sub Group, New Vaccines and Novel Interventions Programme Board, Opportunities Assessment Group, Strategy Delivery Group, etc. He represents PHE’s overseas commercial engagement in the UK InterLab Forum and is member of the India-UK Joint Working Group on Health, and the Filovirus Task Group of the Australia-Canada-UK-US Medical Counter Measures Consortium. He is also a founding Steering Committee Member of the Canada-based BSL4Znet and co-chairs its International Response Working Group.
Vasan obtained his doctorate from Trinity College, Oxford, and has been elected a fellow by several prestigious professional societies.
