Africa Smith de Diego, Researcher, University of Leeds

Africa is a PhD student at the Centre for Doctoral Training of tissue engineering at the University of Leeds, UK, and has a background in genetics and biotechnology. Her research interests include regenerative medicine, bioelectronics and medical engineering, and the translation of relevant projects from the conventional lab to the point of care. Her current research focuses on the development of a cell sorting device to isolate stem cells from bone marrow by using surface acoustic wave dielectrophoresis.

This work is the first demonstration of a high throughput, minimally manipulative separation of viable human dental pulp stromal cells (DPSCs) using remote dielectrophoresis (DEP) induced by shear surface acoustic waves (SH-SAWs).
