Ferry Melchels,
Assistant Professor,
Heriot-Watt University
Dr. Ferry Melchels is an assistant professor at Heriot-Watt University, within the Institute of Biological Chemistry, Biophysics and Bioengineering. He has been developing and studying polymeric biomaterials for 10 years; combining hydrogels, scaffold materials and cells with biofabrication technologies to prepare 3D tissue constructs for regenerative medicine or to be used as in vitro models. His work has been published in leading journals, attracting over 1600 citations in the past 5 years. Ferry holds an MSc in chemical engineering and PhD in biomaterials from the University of Twente (The Netherlands) and has been a Marie Curie post-doctoral fellow between Queensland University of Technology (Brisbane, Australia) and University Medical Center Utrecht (The Netherlands) before starting his PI position in Edinburgh. Besides home brewing the finest beers on the weekend, his future aim is to continue advancing biomaterials-based technology platforms for tissue engineering and drug delivery purposes.
