After a 2-year postdoctoral training program at the Cancer Control Agency of British Columbia (Vancouver, Canada), he was appointed in 1985 as Head of the Laboratory of Tumor Endocrinology. In 2008 he was appointed full professor and together with dr. Stefan Sleijfer he coordinates the research line “Translational Cancer Genomics & Proteomics”. His major research interests are prognostic and predictive factors in breast cancer, including circulating tumor cells, using state-of-the-art genomics and proteomics technologies.

Besides enumeration, characterization of circulating tumor cells (CTC) may improve outcome prediction and treatment guidance. The ability to measure clinically relevant prognostic CTC-specific gene expression profiles underlines the potential of CTC characterization as a tool to improve individualized cancer treatment.
