Dr Julian L. Griffin is a Royal Society University Research Fellow at the Department of
Biochemistry, University of Cambridge, UK. He gained his doctorate from the University of
Oxford after studying in the laboratory of Professor George Radda. Following this he held
Postdoctoral posts as a Harvard and Massachusetts General Hospital Fellow in Radiology and as a research associate at Imperial College London. His research group is currently developing NMR and mass spectrometry based metabolomics as a tool for following the
progression and treatment of multifactorial diseases such as diabetes and obesity.

Metabolomics has been demonstrated to be high throughput and relatively cheap for biomarker discovery. I will outline how we are using this approach in human studies and animal models to identify metabolic biomarkers to monitor drug efficacy, monitor disease progression and undertake patient stratification as a tool for personalised medicine.
