Sibaji Sarkar's Biography

Sibaji Sarkar, Adj Instructor, Boston University School of Medicine

Dr. Sibaji Sarkar received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Jadavpur University, Kolkata. He is faculty at Boston University School of Medicine. In platelets, he first determined that the regulating kinase syk associates with the integrin receptor alphaIIbbeta3, which is critical for initiating thrombus formation. He determined that inhibition of syk kinase and calpain induces tPA mediated clot lysis and sustains NO production. He and colleagues recently showed that HDAC inhibitors regulate DNA methyl transferase1 through ERK inhibition. His current work focuses on different pathways, which regulate expression of silenced tumor suppressor genes and the allele specific expression of imprinted genes.

Epigenetically silenced tumor suppressor genes are regulated by signaling. Their re-expression sensitizes cancer cells to cytotoxic drugs, which is exploited to develop combination therapy.
