Alain Brisson's Biography

Alain Brisson, Professor Emeritus, University of Bordeaux

Alain Brisson has held academic positions in Grenoble, Strasbourg, Groningen and Bordeaux. His research has focused on the elucidation of biological processes occurring at cell membranes by combining molecular imaging and quantification methods. His current research focuses on extracellular vesicles and exosomes, with the objective to improve our understanding on this new class of sub-cellular entities. His group has pioneered original methods of immuno-cryo-electron microscopy and flow cytometry allowing to image and quantify EV in complex media. His main objectives are to deliver standardized methods of EV characterization, identify disease-specific EV signatures and exploit the potential of EV in drug delivery.

The emerging field of extracellular vesicle (EV) and exosome research faces a notorious lack of reliable characterization methods. This is mainly due to the small size of EV/exosomes (mostly from 30 to 500 nm) and the heterogeneity of their suspensions. This presentation will illustrate the advantages of novel methods allowing to image, phenotype, quantify and isolate EVs in complex fluids.
