Jason Poole's Biography

Jason Poole, Director, Trovagene Inc

Jason Poole has more than a decade of experience directing and leading research and development for gene discovery, with a strong focus on molecular diagnostics. Prior to joining Trovagene, Dr. Poole was lead Scientist at EMD Millipore and Nanogen Inc. Previously Dr. Poole studied mitochondrial disease as an NIH Postdoctoral Fellow in the lab of Doug Wallace where he developed highly sensitive tests for heteroplasmic mutational load testing in mitochondrial disease. He obtained a Ph.D. in Molecular Genetics from the University of Illinois, Chicago where he studied the regulatory mechanisms of tumor suppressor genes. Over the last 10 years he has developed and released many products for the research use only and clinical diagnostic markets. These products offer testing utility across diverse fields including mitochondrial genetics, infectious disease, fertility/stem cell biology and cancer. He is currently leading the development of oncology targeted cell-free molecular diagnostic assays at Trovagene.

An optimized isolation technique for circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) makes it possible to detect systemically derived ctDNA in plasma and urine. Using a small footprint capture and enrichment technique, we demonstrate the analytical detection and quantification of these tumor fragments down to a sensitivity of less than 0.01%, creating a non-invasive cancer mutation detection platform using massively parallel sequencing techniques. We are using this proprietary technology platform to establish a quantitative correlation between ctDNA and early detection of therapeutic response, resistance and disease recurrence.
