Andreas Zumbuehl's Biography

Andreas Zumbuehl, Swiss National Science Foundation Professor, University of Fribourg

Andreas Zumbuehl studied chemistry at ETH Zurich and Imperial College London. He then stayed at ETH and did his doctoral work under the guidance of Professor Erick M. Carreira. Two postdoctoral stays followed, one in the group of Professor Robert S. Langer at MIT Cambridge and a second with Professor Joachim Seelig at the Biozentrum Basel. In 2008 Andreas Zumbuehl started his independent academic work as a MaƮtre Assistant at the University of Geneva, Switzerland, where he merged Organic Synthesis, Biomedical Engineering, and Biophysics in order to study the synthesis and the applications of artificial phospholipids. In 2012 Andreas was awarded a Swiss National Science Foundation Professorship and has moved his lab to the University of Fribourg, CH.

Drug carriers that can release drugs locally with such rheological changes can be very useful, e.g., for treating atherosclerosis. Here, we show that vesicles made from a artificial 1,3-diaminophospholipid are stable under static conditions but release their contents at elevated shear stress.
