Nastaran Hashemi, Assistant Professor, Iowa State University

Prof. Nastaran Hashemi is an Assistant Professor and William March Scholar in Mechanical Engineering at Iowa State University. Her research interests are in the areas of Microfluidics, Optofluidics, Bio-MEMS, Biosensors, Biomaterials, Flow Cytometry, Diagnostics and Therapeutics, and Physics of Micro/Nanoscale Phenomena. She is the recipient of 2007 NSF EAPSI Fellowship, 2007 SWE Scholarship, 2008 NSF ADVANCE Grant, 2009 ASEE Postdoctoral Fellowship, and 2012 NRL Research Publication Award. She has published over 30 journal and peer-reviewed conference articles, and given 15 invited national and international lectures. She has served as an organizing committee and chair of the BioMEMS and Microfluidics session for the ASME 2012 Summer Bioengineering Conference.

We have deigned an optofluidic biosensor for high throughput characterization of phytoplankton by their intrinsic fluorescence and light scatter. Phytoplankton with a wide range of sizes and shapes are successfully detected using this approach.
