Mario Rothbauer's Biography

Mario Rothbauer, Researcher, Vienna University of Technology

Mario Rothbauer received an MSc. in Biomedical & Tissue Engineering at the University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien (Vienna, Austria) in 2001 and completed his doctorate in food science and biotechnology in 2015 at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU; Vienna, Austria). At the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology (Vienna, Austria) he worked on the development of lab-on-a-chip systems for cell-based applications that combine cell biology, nanobiotechnology, biosensors and materials science with state-of-the-art microfabrication technologies. Currently, he moved as Post-Doc to the CellChipGroup at the Faculty of Technical Chemistry at the Vienna University of Technology (TUW; Vienna, Austria) to create human barrier-, organ- and multi-organ-on-a-chip as well as human disease models for toxicological and pharmaceutical research with the overall aim to create valid alternatives to animal tests.

With a prevalence of about 1%, rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is the most common chronic inflammatory joint disease, characterized by progressive, intermittent inflammation leading to joint destruction and are among the most frequently diagnosed diseases in aged patients. The talk will cover the development of multiplexed organ-on-a-chips as next-gen in vitro models as disease model resembling onset and progression of inflammatory arthritis. Also, a teasing outlook on its application potential for replacement of animal models and future drug screening efforts will be discussed.
