Peter Park's Biography

Peter Park, Associate Professor, Harvard Medical School

Dr. Park is Associate Professor of Pediatrics and leads a computational genomics laboratory at Harvard Medical School.  Originally trained in applied mathematics at Harvard and Caltech, he was introduced to molecular biology and genomics while carrying out his postdoctoral studies in biostatistics at Harvard.  His laboratory specializes in understanding chromatin structure and its relationship to gene regulation using ChIP-sequencing data, as well as in characterizing the human genome based on whole-genome sequencing.  His laboratory is engaged in several consortium projects including the ENCODE and the Cancer Genome Atlas projects.  He is on the editorial board of Bioinformatics and an associate editor of BMC Bioinformatics.

We have sequenced nearly 1000 cancer genomes at low coverage (4-8X) as part of The Cancer Genome Atlas. I will describe our analysis of copy number and structural variations in these data as well as our methods for estimation of purity and ploidy, algorithms for detection of structural variations, and issues in experimental design.
