Bhupinder Bhullar,
Project Leader/Lab Director,
Novartis Pharma AG
Dr. Bhupinder Bhullar trained in biochemistry, molecular biology, and bioinformatics at the University of Calgary, Canada. He did postdoctoral training in high-throughput proteomics at Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA. As a scientist at the Whitehead Institute, MIT, Cambridge, USA, his research focused on elucidating genetic modifiers of disease mechanisms. Dr. Bhullar joined Novartis Pharma AG in Basel, Switzerland, where his group works on bringing novel low molecular weight compounds, biologics, targets and biomarkers into the drug discovery pipeline. For the last 5 years, his lab has also developed methods to decipher genetic variation associated with drug resistance mechanisms, with the goal to develop pharmacogenomics strategies for patient stratification. Dr. Bhullar has published on using model organisms to explicate the mechanism of human disease targets and to determine the protein target for small molecules in the journals Science and Nature. He was recently awarded the Catalyst Award (Novartis) for the impact of his work on drug discovery.
