Paul Vulto's Biography

Paul Vulto, Senior Researcher/Group Leader, Leiden University

Paul Vulto (Dordrecht, 1977) is a scientist and entrepreneur, who held positions in the Netherlands, Germany, Italy and Japan. He worked as an engineer for the high-tech company Silicon Biosystems in Bologna on dielectrophoresis-based cell separation chip and at IMTEK, University of Freiburg, on an automated microbial diagnostic platform. His current work at the Leiden/Amsterdam Centre for Drug Research is focussing on microfludics for massive parallel screening and 3D cell culturing. Part of his work is now being commercialized by the spin-off company Mimetas.

Using a combination of microfluidics and nanofluidics our group has recently developed an ultra-small device unleashing the full power of isotachophoresis. The use of 'dzITP' will for the first time allow on-chip electrokinetic separations to be integrated into (V)LSI formats for massive parallel next-gen life science applications where high-quality separations are needed e.g. next-gen metabolomics.
