As a result the reality of drug development is no longer a well known and established process followed by biopharmaceutical companies. The increasing speed of technology innovation associated with biomarker discovery is shaping drug development and creating new business models. When a diagnostic is co-developed with a drug to guide its therapy, the aim is that the drug and diagnostic will be incorporated in clinical practice at the same time. Biopharmaceutical companies need simultaneous access to a variety of selection tools that are not part of their core capabilities and can only be made available through partnerships. Bringing together two industries, biopharmaceutical and diagnostics, which have very different business strategies, requires flexibility and creativity to deliver better patient outcomes. |
