Alexandra Perebikovsky,
Researcher,
University of California-Irvine
Alexandra is pursuing her Ph.D. in Physics at the University of California, Irvine, where she leads the CD microfluidics team in Professor Marc Madou’s BioMEMS laboratory. Alexandra has worked with Professor Madou for over 5 years in developing complex lab-on-a-disc assays, with a particular interest in bringing point-of-care (POC) systems to remote, resource poor environments. She is the author of multiple papers in this field and is currently working on a book on CD microfluidics. Her latest research interests include using CD microfluidics for detection of antibiotic resistance. In this regard, she has helped develop a collaboration between researchers at UCI, UCLA, and a startup, MicrobeDX, to develop an automated, ultrafast antibiotic susceptibility test on a spinning microfluidic platform. She is currently working to make this test available to rural health kiosks in India to replace traditional biomedical labs and doctors offices. The goal is to improve antibiotic stewardship by cutting down on improper prescription through rapid and accurate diagnosis.
