Mark Butler,
Senior Research Fellow,
University of Queensland
Mark Butler is an expert in natural product based drug discovery with over 20 years of experience in natural product chemistry and over 15 years of experience in industry based collaborative research. He is currently working at the Institute for Molecular Bioscience, The University of Queensland, on the rational design and development of novel anti-infective drugs, and is also a researcher in the Australian Infectious Disease (AID) Research Centre. He graduated with a PhD from The University of Melbourne in 1993 and then undertook postdoctoral work at Arizona State University (1993-1994). He has also worked at the Queensland Pharmaceutical Research Institute (1994-1999, Griffith University), Centre for Natural Product Research (1999-2002, Singapore) and MerLion Pharmaceuticals (2002-2009, Singapore), and was an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the National University of Singapore (NUS) from 2006-2009. Current research interests include the discovery and development of drug leads to clinical candidates, mode of action (MoA) studies using chemical biology and metabolomic techniques, lipidomics and natural product chemistry.
