Jennifer Lewis's Biography

Jennifer Lewis, Professor, Harvard University School of Engineering and Applied Sciences

Jennifer A. Lewis recently joined the faculty of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University. An innovative pioneer in 3D printing, she leads a vibrant research group that creates new materials and printing platforms for fabricating functional devices and vascularized tissues. She is a Fellow of American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Materials Research Society, the American Physical Society, and the American Ceramic Society. She has received several awards, most notably the MRS Medal, the ACS Langmuir Lecture Award, and the NSF Presidential Faculty Fellow Award. She has published 130 papers, holds 8 patents, and has founded two companies to commercialize the technologies developed in her lab.

The ability to pattern biomaterials in planar and three-dimensional forms is of critical importance for several applications, including 3D cell culture, tissue engineering, and organ mimics. 3D printing enables one to rapidly design and fabricate soft materials in arbitrary patterns without the need for expensive tooling, dies, or lithographic masks.  In this talk, the design of novel cell-laden, hydrogel (extracellular matrix) and fugitive (vascular) inks with tailored rheological properties for 3D bioprinting will be described.  We will also present recent advances in 3D bioprinting of vascularized, heterogeneous cell-laden tissue constructs with as well as ongoing efforts to characterize these 3D living architectures.
