Darren Riley 's Biography



Darren Riley , Associate Professor, University of Pretoria

Prof. Riley studied chemistry at the University of the Witwatersrand. In 2010, he was appointed full time as a principle scientist at iThemba Pharmaceuticals a drug discovery institute targeting neglected and African diseases. He subsequently moved to the University of Pretoria in 2013 establishing a research group with a focus on both drug discovery linked to Alzheimer’s disease as well as the development of process routes to pharmaceuticals utilizing flow chemistry. Dr Riley is currently working on several industry linked collaborations linked to the use of flow technology as an enabling technology for the manufacture of pharmaceuticals.

The presentation will focus on the development of flow-based synthetic routes to several pharmaceuticals and will include aspects of batch-flow hybridization and reaction engineering. Insight will also be given pertaining to the use of flow technology as a disruptive leap-frogging technology for the localization of pharmaceutical manufacturing in developing countries like South Africa.
