John Naber's Biography



John Naber, Associate Principal Scientist, Merck & Co

John leads the Flow Chemistry team within the Enabling Technologies group at Merck Sharpe and Dohme (MSD). The New Jersey based flow team works closely with the larger process chemistry organization to implement flow chemistry processes during late stage and commercial route development.
John received his PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2010 where he completed his research under the direction of Stephen Buchwald. During his time at MIT he was introduced to flow chemistry through the MIT-Novartis Center for Continuous Manufacturing. He holds a BSc in Chemistry from the University of Victoria in Canada where he had the opportunity to complete six coop terms across the country for a diverse set of companies including Xerox, Shire Pharmaceuticals and Merck-Frosst.

The development of a novel method for ketimine additions enabled a key step in the synthesis of Merck Sharpe and Dohme’s (MSD) Phase III compound for Alzheimer’s disease. The production of hundreds of kilograms of material in a pilot plant campaign and the associated mixing studies at lab and plant scale are presented.
