Nicole Pamme's Biography



Nicole Pamme, Professor in Analytical Chemistry, The University of Hull

Professor Nicole Pamme holds a chair in Analytical Chemistry at the University of Hull (UK) and is part of the Lab-on-a-Chip research group which brings together staff from Chemistry, Engineering and Biomedical and Environmental Sciences on research projects into microfluidic system and process integration, as well as biomedical and clinical diagnostics applications. She has 20 of experience in the design and fabrication of microfluidic devices and their application in analysis and chemical synthesis and has authored >120 peer reviewed publications, patents and book chapters.

Prof. Pamme co-chaired the microTAS 2016 conference in Dublin and currently serves as President of the Chemical and Biological Microsystems Society (CBMS). She is an Associate Editor of the Analyst (RSC) and served on the Editorial Advisory Boards of Lab on a Chip (RSC), Analytical Chemistry (ACS) and Analytica Chimica Acta (Elsevier). Teaching activities within the Department include lectures on Lab-on-a-Chip, Biosensors and Forensic Chemistry.

Nicole Pamme obtained a Diploma in Chemistry from the University of Marburg (Germany), in 1999. For her PhD she went to Imperial College London (UK) where she joined the group of Prof. Andreas Manz. It was here that she first started working with microfluidic devices, more specifically, on single particle analysis inside microfluidic channels. In 2004, she moved to Tsukuba (Japan) as an independent research fellow in the International Centre for Young Scientists (ICYS) based at the Japanese National Institute for Materials Science. She was appointed as a lecturer in Hull in December 2005.

Microfluidics In Resource-Limited Settings

Our research centers on the study of microfluidic lab-on-a-chip devices applied to environmental analysis, biomedical research and the synthesis of smart materials. Microfluidic devices offer the possibility for in-the-field and point-of-care analysis provided the devices are portable, require only minimal external instrumentation and little power and are robust. In our group, we are investigating a simple magnetic particle based extraction method, IFAST (immiscible filtration based on surface tension), for pathogen isolation from clinical and environmental matrices in collaboration with researchers in South Africa and Kenya. Furthermore, as part of an EU-funded project (Sullied Sediments) we are developing paper microfluidic devices for on-site measurement of water quality markers such as phosphate. These are being tested by members of the general public who upload data via a custom-built up for data collection with high spatial and temporal resolution.
