Borje Sellergren's Biography

Borje Sellergren, Head, Technical University of Dortmund

Börje Sellergren (MSc 1982, PhD: 1988) studied chemistry at the Institute of Technology in Lund in Sweden, where he also received his PhD in 1988. After postdoctoral training in the group of Kenneth J. Shea at University of California Irvine he started as an assistant professor at the University of Mainz in 1994. In August 2002 he moved to a position as Privadozent at the Faculty of Chemistry, Technische Universität Dortmund, heading the research group on Molecular Imprinting. He has recently accepted a research chair in „Biomedical Technology with emphasis on Molecular Imprinting“ at the University of Malmö. Sellergrens research is centered around Molecular Imprinting and related supramolecular, polymer and materials chemistry. He has published 121 reviewed journal papers (h-index 48), he is the main inventor on more than 6 patents and is one of the cofounders of the Biotage company MIP Technologies.

The talk will describe our efforts to develop molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs), in soluble form termed "plastic antibodies", for use as capture agents in peptide, protein or lipid analysis. I will emphasize the added value of these receptors over their biological counterparts such as the recognition of peptidic biomarkers under nonphysiological conditions e.g. acetonitrile-buffer mixtures or in denaturing media.
