Maurizio Benaglia's Biography

Maurizio Benaglia, Full Professor of Organic Chemistry, Dipartimento di Chimica, Università degli Studi di Milano

Maurizio Benaglia is Full Professor of Organic Chemistry at the Università degli Studi di Milano, Italy. He is currently Director of ISPROCHEM, International School of Process Chemistry, Coordinator of LCS (Laboratory of Catalysis and Sustainable synthesis) at the University of Milano and member of the Scientific Committee of IASOC (Int. Advanced School of Organic Synthesis). He is coordinator of the European H2020 MSCA ITN-EID (European Industrial Doctorate) project “Technotrain”. Author of almost 200 papers, his research interests deal with the development of innovative synthetic methodologies, new chiral catalysts, synthesis of pharmaceutically active compounds, taking advantage of enabling technologies (flow chemistry, 3D-printed devices, microwave, alternative reaction medium, deep eutectic solvents).

(Organo)catalytic, stereoselective reactions involving nitro derivatives in batch and in (micro)-mesoreactors will be presented, and compared with stereoselective catalytic in-flow reactions in 3D-printed reactors. The fabrication of ad hoc designed reactors and other devices, to perform different reactions becomes now feasible and gives new impulse to the use of enabling technologies in the synthesis of complex molecules. The metal-free reduction of nitro compounds to amines mediated by trichlorosilane will be also discussed, comparing the in-batch procedure and  the continuous flow process performed in mesoreactors.
