Dr. G. M. Anantharamaiah is a Professor in the Department of Medicine. He received his B.S. degree in 1967 from Bangalore University, India and his M.S. degree in 1969 from Bangalore University, as well. Dr. Ananth completed his Ph.D. degree in 1978 a Bangalore University. He received his postdoctoral training at Ohio State University in Columbus, OH in 1979. Dr. Ananth joined the UAB faculty in 1982 as an Assistant Professor in Pathology. His research interests includes studying structure and function of plasma apolipoproteins, Apo-A1 structure and function, Apo-E structure and function, Structure of Apo-A-1 in alzheimer disease research. His Research also involves Peptide synthesis, protein analysis. Biophysical, biochemical studies. Transgenic mouse technology, Molecular biology in vivo models of atherosclerosis.

 

Umesh Desai

Professor, Virginia Commonwealth University

Dr. Desai is a Professor of Medicinal Chemistry and Director of Institute for Structural Biology, Drug Discovery and Development in the School of Pharmacy at Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA. He received his baccalaureate from the M. S. University of Baroda, and his doctorate from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, India. Following short experiences at University of Iowa, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and University of Illinois, Chicago, he moved to VCU in 1998 as an assistant professor. He specializes in rational drug design with emphasis on anti-thrombotics and anti-cancer agents. He has received an Established Investigator Award from the American Heart Association (2006) and Distinguished Scholarship Award from VCU (2013).

 

Dipak Ramji

Dr Dipak Ramji is Professor of Cardiovascular Science at the School of Biosciences in Cardiff University. He received his BSc (Hons) degree (Biochemistry) and his PhD (Molecular Biology) from the University of Leeds. This was followed by post-doctoral research at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (Heidelberg) and the Istituto di Ricerche di Biologia Molecolare P. Angeletti (Rome) with fellowships from the Royal Society and the EU. He joined Cardiff University in 1992 and completed 25 years of service in August 2017. His research is focused on understanding how the immune and inflammatory responses regulate cellular processes in heart disease with the goal of attaining deeper mechanistic insight and identifying preventative/therapeutic agents. His research has been funded by several organisations and received continuous funding from the British Heart Foundation since 1997. He has published over 150 research articles (h index 33 and i10 index 66 with over 5500 citations). He is an Editorial Board member of 16 international journals; regular organising committee member, speaker and track/session chair at international conferences on heart disease; involved in grant evaluation for over 20 organisations; and supervised over 25 PhD students. In addition to research, he is involved in teaching and administration, including Postgraduate Tutor for the Biomedicine division at the School of Biosciences and external examiner for Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences at the University of Reading and King’s College London.

 

Ashwinikumar Raut

Dr. Ashwinikumar Raut is an Ayurveda consultant and Investigator from Mumbai. He reinforces Ayurveda with latest research developments in his clinical practice of over three decades. Dr Raut is Director, Clinical Research & integrative medicine at Kasturba Health Society’s Medical Research Centre, Mumbai. He is faculty and consultant to premier medical institutes and hospitals in Mumbai. He also gives consultation to Ayurveda industry. Dr Raut completed graduation from R.A. Podar Medical College, Mumbai and post graduation from Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University. He is blessed with a family tradition of Ayurveda and is a third generation Vaidya.
Dr. Raut has successfully completed research projects related to Ayurveda formulations and arthritis sponsored by DBT, CSIR, ICMR and AYUSH Govt. of India. He is the recipient of CDRI (Central Drug Research Institute) award for excellence in research for his work in Ayurveda & rheumatology. He also receives AAPNA (Association of Ayurvedic Professionals of North America) International Dhanwantari Award for excellence in Ayurveda Practice. Dr Raut is an associate editor of JAIM a leading Ayurveda journal besides being on editorial boards and reviewer for other peer reviewed bio-medical journals. Dr. Raut has over 70 scientific publications and over 150 scientific presentations.

 

Ashok Vaidya

Dr. Vaidya is from a lineage of Ayurveda and medicine; the heritage archives are a treasure trove for new leads from natural products. He evolved Reverse Pharmacology (RP) to explore this heritage. His medical and research education was at Mumbai and at Yale. With Prof UK Sheth, he pioneered the first Clinical Pharmacology Unit in India. At Yale, he conducted trials with brocresine, p-CPA and L-dopa. Later, at CIBA and KEM Hospital, he carried out Phase I, II and III trials on several new drug molecules. He conducted the largest post-marketing surveillance trials. He was the Regional Medical Director for CIBA-GEIGY. Reverse Pharmacology has led to new leads from plants for Parkinson’s disease, hepatitis, eczema, diabetes, cancer, arthritis,malaria etc. ICMR’s Advanced Centre of Reverse Pharmacology in Traditional Medicine was awarded to Kasturba Health Society. Dr. Vaidya has been honored with orations and awards. He was the President of the ISCPT and of AMAPI. He has been on the editorial boards of several journals. He has been a consultant and expert to W.H.O., CSIR, ICMR, DBT, AYUSH, and for the 11th and 12th five-year plans of India. Dr. Vaidya has travelled extensively, as he has been a much-sought out speaker. Dr. Vaidya has more than 290 research publications to his credit. He has guided graduate students in basic and clinical drug research and Ayurveda. Dr Vaidya is married to Dr Rama Vaidya, a reproductive endocrinologist. They have a daughter- Prof Vidita Vaidya, a neuroscientist.
