Abstract

Metabolic Dysregulation in Biofluids of Tuberculosis Patients at Diagnosis

Ranjan Nanda, Group Leader, ICGEB

Pulmonary tuberculosis is one of the leading causes of deaths in India, killing 2 persons every three minutes and approximately 1000 every day. Productive work days of 100 million are lost due to illness associated with tuberculosis and 1.3 billion days due to tuberculosis deaths leading to significant dent to Indian economy. Understanding the infection induced shift in host metabolic pathways that facilitate the pathogen to get necessary nutrients for its own survival might be useful to develop adjunct therapeutic candidates. Understanding these critical host pathogen interactions at detailed molecular levels is now possible with the development of mass spectrometry and chemometric tools. In a comparative metabolic profiling study of urine samples collected from active and non tuberculosis patients we observed deregulated tyrosine-phenylalanine metabolism in tuberculosis patients at case presentation. We also analyzed acetylation status of tuberculosis patients and identified novel tuberculosis drug intermediates by analyzing urine metabolites of tuberculosis patients after receiving first tuberculosis dose. Few of these findings highlighting the importance of metabolomics for metabotyping of tuberculosis patients at diagnosis will be shared in this presentation.
