Karl-Friedrich Becker's Biography

Karl-Friedrich Becker, Head, Technical University of Munich

Prof. Becker is Head of the Laboratory for Experimental Pathology at the Technical University of Munich, Germany. He identified the first gene mutations in the cell adhesion molecule E-cadherin in human tumours and demonstrated their tumour biological and clinical relevance using mutation-specific monoclonal antibodies. He is currently applying Reverse Phase Protein Arrays (RPPA) for functional protein profiling of clinical tissue samples. Using this technology the focus of his clinically and cell biologically oriented research is the identification of novel biomarkers for diagnosis and therapy of cancer patients.

For functional protein profiling in clinical tissue samples it is necessary to implement tools that allow fast, precise, cheap, and simultaneous analysis of many network components while requiring only a small amount of clinical material. Reverse phase protein array (RPPA) is a promising technology that meets these requirements while enabling quantitative measurement of proteins and phosphoproteins.
