Andrei Georgescu's Biography

Andrei Georgescu, Researcher, University of Pennsylvania

Andrei Georgescu is a biologist with a background in mechanical and electrical engineering, who aims to develop innovative platforms to create and culture functional human tissues in high throughput. His focus is on engineering biological systems that capture the deep complexity of multi-tissue interactions in the human body, in a form factor scalable to both animal-free pharmaceutical drug testing, and to personalized medicine for therapeutic and diagnostic use. Georgescu’s “organ-on-a-chip” models have been used as novel instruments for tissue engraftment, and for research on diabetes, vascular biology, and immunology.

Infections are commonly reported onboard spacecraft, but the mechanisms responsible are not well understood, with both tissue-specific and systemic responses in the bone marrow having been implicated. We have designed living, breathing, thumbnail-sized 3D models of the human lung and bone marrow to test the dynamics of lung infection in astronauts, and better understand the cause of this immunosuppression—which is especially worrisome for extended journeys to Mars and beyond.
