Weibo Zhang's Biography

Weibo Zhang, Research Associate, Department of Orthodontics, Tufts university, School of Dental Medicine

I received my D.D.S. from School of Stomatology, Wuhan University, Wuhan, P.R. China. Afterwards, I received training in analyzing dental pulp cells during my doctoral studies in Dr. Jansen’s lab in the Netherlands, where I earned my Ph.D degree. I then joined Dr. Yelick’s lab as a Postdoctoral Associate. My research is now focusing on investigating the use of novel hydrogel scaffolds, and nanofabricated materials, for dental tissue engineering applications, using mammalian rodent and minipig animal models.

The long-term objective of this study is to establish a model for coordinated bioengineered alveolar bone and tooth regeneration. The ability to effectively and simultaneously bioengineer living jaw bone and teeth would improve craniofacial reconstruction time and cost. This study showed that human dental pulp stem cells seeded E1001(1k)/ß-TCP scaffolds support the rapid regeneration of osteo-dentin like mineralized jaw tissue, suggesting a promising new therapy for eventual coordinated alveolar jaw bone and tooth regeneration. Current efforts focus on scaffolding fabrication methods to regenerate alveolar bone and teeth.
