Giancarlo Russo's Biography


Giancarlo Russo, Bioinformatics and Biostatistics; Next Generation Sequencing Expert, ETH Zurich / University of Zurich

At the FGCZ, Dr. Russo is mainly involved in the development of statistical and computational resources for the analysis of DNA structural variations via sequencing with high-throughput instruments (particularly third generation technologies), bioinformatics of denovo genome assembly and transcriptomics analysis.

Prior to joining the FGCZ in December 2011, Giancarlo has received a Ph.D. in Mathematics from Cardiff University (2009) and worked as Associate Researcher at the MRC Centre for Neuropsychiatric Genetics and Genomics (2009-2011) at Cardiff University, School of Medicine.

The advent of the PacBio RS, whose random error model and circular consensus algorithm allow for base calls quality which are orders of magnitude better than current NGS platform, opens up new frontiers in the detection of very low frequency mutations.  This talk will focus on a recent application to colorectal cancer.
