Leileata Russo's Biography

Leileata Russo, Research Professor, Mass General Hospital (MGH)/Harvard Medical School

Leileata M. Russo, PhD., currently heads the Exosome Biology Lab within the Massachusetts General Hospital Division of Nephrology’s Program in Membrane Biology. In addition Dr. Russo is involved in various entrepreneurial activities aimed at enabling translation of research from ‘bench to bedside’. Dr. Russo received her PhD from the Dept. of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Monash University Victoria, Australia in 2003. She was promoted to Junior Faculty at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School in 2007 and left in 2010 to join Exosome Diagnostic as Director of Research and scientific co-founder. Her academic and industry research has focused on developing a diagnostic platform for urinary exosomes.

Exosomes and microvesicles have been widely examined for their biological role in health and disease. This presentation will cover their potential use as a non-invasive ‘biopsy’ of the genitourinary tract and beyond. We have demonstrated that exosome and microvesicle RNA (collectively referred to as exoRNA) is extremely stable enabling reproducibility and enhancing sensitivity and specificity of analysis. An overview of the current use and reports of exosomes and microvesicles as a diagnostic platform will be given.
