Leonid Margolis's Biography

Leonid Margolis, Head, Section of Intercellular Interactions, Eunice Kennedy-Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, NIH

Leonid Margolis graduated from the Lomonosov Moscow University (MSU) obtaining degrees both in mathematics and biology and became a Professor of Cell Biology. He received a Ph.D. degree in Oncology and advanced Doctor of Science degree in Biophysics. After the fall of the Soviet Union Dr. Margolis was allowed to travel abroad and worked as a Visiting Professor at the University of California (San Diego), University of Stuttgart, Kings College, London and Johns Hopkins University. He served as an International Professor for the American Society of Microbiology. He was selected to a prestigious position of the NIH Fogarty Scholar-in-Residence and later joined National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. He continues to be affiliated with this Institute as a Chief of the Section on Intercellular Interactions. He has served on numerous committees, advisory boards, and editorial boards. Dr. Margolis research are focused on inter-viral interactions in human tissues, HIV-1 and herpesviruses transmissions, and the role of extracellular vesicles in these processes.

Extracellular vesicles play an important role in human immuno-modulation mediated by cytokines both in normal condition and in pathologies. We found that both myocardial infarction and in HIV-1 infection extracellular vesicles are associated with immune activation, an important driver of the disease.
