Han Gardeniers's Biography

Han Gardeniers, Professor, University of Twente

Han Gardeniers (BSc: 1982; MSc: 1985; PhD: 1990) started as an assistant professor in the field of Micromechanical Tranducers at the University of Twente in 1990. From 2001 till 2003 he was active as a senior scientist in industry, first at Kymata Ltd./Alcatel Optronics, and later at Micronit Microfluidics. In 2003 he rejoined the University of Twente, as an associate professor with the Biosensors/Lab-on-a-Chip Group. Since January 2007 he holds the research chair "Mesoscale Chemical Systems" at the University of Twente. His teaching efforts in the BSc and MSc programs of the University of Twente are mainly in the areas of physical and analytical chemistry. His research interest and expertise is in miniaturized chemical synthesis and analysis systems and in nanotechnology related to the study of biomolecular interactions and dynamics in confinement. He has published 170 reviewed journal papers in the field of microfabrication, MEMS, lab-on-a-chip and microfluidics and is the inventor on 6 patents.

Microfluidic technology allows accurate handling of liquid volumes in the nl to µl range, in miniaturized systems with integrated in-situ monitoring elements. This development is especially relevant for the Life Sciences, but also offers opportunities for process analytical technology. Several device examples will be discussed, including HPLC on a chip and microfluidic NMR and IR probes.
