Damian Connolly's Biography



Damian Connolly, Senior Researcher, Dublin City University

Dr. Damian Connolly received his B.Sc. (Hons) Degree in Analytical Science (Chemistry Option) from Dublin City University in 1999. He joined Bristol Myers-Squibb Company (Swords Laboratories Ltd) in 1999 as a Quality Control Analyst. In the same year he began a programme of postgraduate research part-time (Development of fast ion chromatography) at Dublin City University under the supervision of Prof. Brett Paull and was awarded a Ph.D within only five years (in 2005) despite having concurrently worked full-time within industry. In January 2006 he took up a position of post-doctoral researcher in the Centre for Bioanalytical Sciences (CBAS) working upon the modification of polymer monoliths using photografting methods. Much work also involved development of novel monolith characterisation protocols involving contactless conductivity. Other projects also included the qualitative and quantitative analysis of raw materials (yeastolates and chemically defined media) and in-process samples supplied by the bio-pharmaceutical industry, which involved close collaboration with CBAS industrial partners. In January 2009, he moved to the Irish Separation Science Cluster as Programme Coordinator (Separation Sciences, DCU), responsible for coordinating research efforts in separation science based in DCU and in close collaboration with academic partners in UCC and numerous industrial partners. Dr. Connolly is a full member of the Royal Society of Chemistry (MRSC) and is an Associate Director of the California Separation Science Society (CASSS). Dr. Connolly is the author of 21 papers in peer-reviewed journals which have been cited a total of 217 times (Web of Science, Aug 2010) and co-author of one book chapter. He is a regular reviewer for peer-reviewed journals in the areas of analytical chemistry and separation science such as Journal of Chromatography A, Analytica Chimica Acta and Analytical Letters.

The preparation and application of silica monoliths with a dense surface coating of nanoparticles (iron oxide or gold) for enrichment of phosphopeptides or glycoproteins respectively shall be discussed. Furthermore, the preparation of continuous gold films upon capillaries or stationary phases will also be shown.
