Alessandro Schiavetta, Main Investigator, Head, Innovative Therapies Unit, Ospedale Santa Corona

Dr. Alessandro Schiavetta specialized in Cardiac Surgery in 1992 at Verona University and in Vascular Surgery in 2001 at Pavia University, in Italy. He worked as a vascular surgeon c/o Imperia Civil Hospital (Imperia, Italy) and then c/o S. Corona Hospital (Pietra Ligure, Italy). Since 2009 he is the Head of the Innovative Therapies Unit c/o the Department of Vascular Surgery, S. Corona Hospital, Pietra Ligure. His interest in stem cells therapy for peripheral arterial disease began in 2008. The NAPLES Study (Naples And Pietra Ligure Evaluation of StemCells), in order to set the efficacy and safety of stem cells for the treatment of peripheral arterial disease, critical limb ischemia and diabetic foot started in 2008 in collaboration with Naples University.

NAPLES Study ended in 2012 and tested the use of stem cells in the treatment of patients affected by arterial diseases and critical limb ischemia. Angiogenetic therapies have shown to be promising and allow an increase of amputation-free survival of patients. And new frontiers are in front of us.
