Stephen Forsythe's Biography



Stephen Forsythe, Professor, Nottingham Trent University

Professor Steve Forsythe is Professor of Microbiology at Nottingham Trent University (UK). He is currently on the FSA’s Advisory Committee for Animal Feedingstuffs (ACAF) and also the ACMSF subgroup on antimicrobial resistance. His main research areas have been into pathogenic bacteria associated with food poisoning (Campylobacter and Salmonella) and specialising in Cronobacter. The latter work has covered developing improved detection and identification methods, virulence traits, genotyping and genomics. He is curator for the Cronobacter PubMLST database (www.pubmlst.org/cronobacter/). He has over eighty peer-review papers and has written several books on food microbiology. The most popular being ‘The Microbiology of Safe Food’ (2nd edition, Wiley-Blackwell). He was on the European Food Safety Authority for several years, and has been advisor to the FAO-WHO for their three risk assessments of the microbiological safety of infant formula. To ‘relax’ he enjoys classical guitar music, and trains in taekwondo (Korean martial art) for which he has a 3rd Dan black belt. His homepage is www.foodmicrobe.com.

The application of NGS to the emergent bacterial pathogen associated with infant meningitis will be reviewed, demonstrating the rapid characterisation, improved understanding which have been achieved, and the contribution to control of the bacterium as recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO).
