Three-dimensional models of drug target tissues that recapitulate human responses are needed for drug screening. Here we introduce a renal proximal tubule model enabled by microfluidics and bioprinting that allows for drug disposition and safety studies.

Core/Shell Bioprinting of Complex Tissue Equivalents

By means of 3D plotting (extrusion of pasty materials) scaffolds and cell-loaded constructs can be fabricated easily out of a variety of different biomaterials. We have developed a technology for manufacturing of scaffolds, built up of core/shell and hollow strands, consisting of stiff materials in the shell and soft biopolymer hydrogels in the core part. Based on this technology we have started to develop implants and tissue engineered constructs for several types of tissues.

A Novel Laser Sintered-Titanium Cage Favors Human Osteoprogenitors Performance For Improved Intervertebral Discs Replacement

A new laser-sintered titanium disc (LSTD) with mesh-shaped architecture was introduced considering attachment, colonization and mineralizing matrix formation by BM-MSC. Our findings reveal a better biocompatibility and an improved osteoinductive property of the new LSTD for more performing approaches in vertebral surgery.

New Cross-linking Strategies and Physical Hydrogels for Dispense Plotting

This lecture will introduce thiol-ene cross-linking as alternative to free radical polymerization to stabilize printed hydrogel structures. Furthermore, a purely physically cross-linked system based on recombinant spider silk proteins will be introduced, in which beta-sheet interactions facilitate good printability and stability of the constructs.

We have developed dynamically adhesive micro-patterned substrates using thiol-alkyne based functionalization of polymer brushes. This novel experimental system can be used to study various aspects of cell migration and gain new mechanistic insights into wound repair.
