In microfluidic operations, enhancing detection sensitivity and resolution are needed to meet the detection limits because of the dilute sample solutions, ultra-small volumes and short detection length in microfluidic devices. This talk will present the use of microfluidic temperature gradient for concentrating solutes, DNAs and particles.

Measurement of cell compressibility by ultrasound in microfluidics

Ultrasound has been used to move or manipulate micro-sized particles, such as biological cells, in microfluidic lab-on-chip systems. The particles experience an acoustic radiation force that arises from the scattering of the incident sound field due to differences in material properties between the particle and the surrounding medium. In this talk, the use of this acoustic radiation force to measure the bulk modulus or compressibility of cells will be presented. Numerical calculations of this radiation force on non-spherical particles will also be discussed.

Micropatterned-Human Embryo (µ-HUE) Platform for Detection of Human Developmental Toxicity

This study presents a scalable human pluripotent stem cell (hPSC)-based screening platform to detect developmental toxicity in human. Using this in vitro model, we could not only measure dose-dependent effects but also correctly classify species-specific drug (Thalidomide) and false negative drug (D-Penicillamine) as compared to the leading in vitro mouse embryonic stem cell test.
