New Tools for Synthetic Biology

Synthetic biology demands high precision tools capable of reprogramming a cell’s genetic code and manipulating cells into tissue to produce predictable functions. We show that it is now possible to satisfy these specifications using nanopores to reprogram the genes of a single cell with single molecule precision, and optical tweezers to position with submicron precision multiple cell types to engineer three dimensional heterogeneous tissue architectures.


From Microfluidic Components to a true Lab-on-a-Chip - Modular Approaches for Integrated Microfluidics

Multidrug resistance (MDR) is the major cause of failure in chemotherapy of acute myeloid leukemia (AML). The reversal effects of MDR inhibitors are investigated to improve chemotherapy sensitivity using a microfluidic method for single-cell measurements.


Monitoring Dynamic Interactions of Tumor Cells with Tissue and Immune Cells in a Lab-on-a-Chip

The need to successfully deposit very small volumes of biological and chemical content on devices exists across a wide range of applications, in research and diagnostics, such as microarray spotting on glass surfaces, and depositing samples on pre-defined microfluidics targets. Our non-contact dispensing technology has been perfected to reliably deliver droplets in the 70 to 800 picoliter range. It has been implemented in a way that allows for a very smooth transition from basic R&D activities all the way to full manufacturing-scale utilization. The presentation will illustrate how this is implemented in a wide range of applications.

Multiplexed Infectious Disease Testing - Sound Point-of-Care Diagnostics

We have developed a new technology which enables us to shape acoustic fields and tailor their interaction with fluids. We have now demonstrated the concept on a range of medical diagnostics, from in vivo glucose sensing to molecular assays, enabling sample preparation, reagent actuation and sensing. We currently have a range of projects exploring multiplexed clinical testing for malaria, tuberculosis and sexually transmitted diseases, with NHS partners.

LabTube – A Novel "Microfluidic App" for Sample Preparation and Diagnostics Operated in a Laboratory Centrifuge

The LabTube is a novel lab-on-a-chip cartridge processed by a laboratory centrifuge. Not requiring specialized processing devices this "microfluidic app" has low market entry barriers. Fully automated DNA-extraction and protein purification are demonstrated. The LabTube is amenable to sample-to-answer diagnostics.


Lab-on-DVD: A Novel Platform for Point of Care Diagnostics

Novel Functions in Bio- and Fluidic Microstructures Using the Off-Stoichiometry Thiol-Ene (OSTE) Polymer Platform

We have formulated and demonstrated a novel, superior, polymer system, OSTE, and its manufacturing platform, which is based on the mixture of three monomers: thiols, -enes and epoxies. The uniqueness of the OSTE approach stems from the curing in two distinct steps: after the first cure, an intermediate polymer is formed which is ideally suited for surface modifications and bonding; after the second cure we obtain an inert and robust polymer. The talk will introduce the novel polymer, and show functional medical and microfluidic components that demonstrate the unique opportunities that OSTE provides in terms of mechanical properties, surface modification and bonding.

Microfluidic Systems for Biomarker Analysis and Cancer Diagnosis

We describe microfluidic systems for (i) implementation of a sensitive immunoassay by using manipulation of magnetic microparticles and (ii) for accurate assessment of immunohistochemical biomarker expression on cancer tissue slices.


Lab-on-Chip Systems for Pathogen Analysis

Microfluidic and nanotechnological systems on chip exhibit the potential of cell based analysis especially pathogen detection on chip. Their use and suitability to be integrated into highly-sensitive bioanalytical tests was demonstrated so far. Unsolved problems are the detection of low concentrations of pathogens in real environment samples without any interference. The integration of actuation elements, electrophoresis, enrichment and purification steps enable the rapid detection of pathogen in real samples.
