Milos Kostic's Biography

Milos Kostic, Researcher, Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research

Dr. Kostic currently works as a research fellow at the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. He earned his B.Sc. in Biology in 2010 (major Molecular Biology and Physiology) from the University of Belgrade, Serbia. He moved to Germany to achieve his M.Sc. (major Neuroscience) from Heidelberg University in 2012, with mentor Prof. Dr. Ana-Martin Villalba at the German Cancer Research Center. He finished his PhD in 2017 in the lab of Prof. Dr. Wieland Huttner, at Max Planck Institute for Cell Biology and Genetics, Dresden University of Technology. The focus of his PhD was the role of Hippo signaling pathway in the evolutionary expansion of human neocortex. His current research interests are brain development, 3D in vitro cultures and modelling neurodevelopmental disorders.

Recent breakthroughs in 3D brain organoid systems show that they can recapitulate aspects of human neurogenesis, such as cytoarchitecture, cell type heterogeneity, lineage progression and gene expression that are absent in 2D models. These properties mark them as attractive model system to study neurodevelopmental disorders. However, brain organoid research suffers from the lack of rigorous quality control for heterogeneity. To address this, we developed a high-throughput platform to generate organoids from multiple stem cell lines. We will present comprehensive quality control of brain organoids using single cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) coupled with immunohistochemistry analysis.
